Congratulations, you’ve decided to go back to school to further you education, start a new career, or obtain a promotion at work. Classes are scheduled, books purchased, and study guides received. Now what? Here are a few these tips to make returning to school a little easier.
- Before you get started create an appropriate study space. It needs to be private, quiet, comfortable, well-lit, and have enough room to spread out books and other materials.
- When using a computer for school, make sure you have a backup plan in case of an emergency. It helps to know the business hours of local libraries, internet cafes, and locations with Wi-Fi as nothing can be more stressful than power failures, internet issues, or system crashes.
- Back up everything and then back it up again. Experienced students know that nothing can make a grown person cry faster than a lost assignment or research paper. Make sure that anything you do on your computer gets saved on a hard drive, backup hard drive, and a flash drive.
- Put school work into your schedule. Take out your calendar and immediately schedule time to read materials, study, research assignments, and complete homework. Look at these scheduled times as appointments that cannot be cancelled.
- Schedule breaks between sessions. This keeps your body refreshed and your mind alert.
- Complete the hard stuff or less interesting topics first when you have the most energy and are alert. Waiting to the last minute only causes frustration, stress, and lack of sleep.
- Use your time wisely. Have study materials handy for idle times such as waiting in traffic, sitting in the doctor’s waiting room, during your kids dance or practice sessions, and even in long checkout lines.
- Get enough sleep. Poor learning and retention of information occurs due to fatigue.
- Find a study partner or group that will keep you motivated and assist you when you need help.
Good luck on your educational goals and keep your eyes on the prize.
